out of the blue was established in 1994 as a small gallery off Edinburgh's Royal Mile, with the aim of making the arts more accessible. In 1996, out of the blue instigated the conversion of the old bus depot offices on New Street into it's current home, a 13,000 ft² multi-disciplinary arts centre, which has become firmly established as an important feature of Edinburgh's cultural makeup.

The Bongo Club, out of the blue's in-house venue and core revenue earner, generates income to support out of the blue and the running of the entire arts centre, without cost to the government, council, taxpayer or lottery ticket buyer. Within the club is the New Street Exhibition Space. Upstairs is The Cutting Room dance rehearsal and workshop space, and thirty one studios housing a range of artists of all media.

Besides keeping all of these areas running as smoothly as the conditions allow, out of the blue promotes and coordinates live music events involving groups and artists from Edinburgh and the world, a constantly changing programme of exhibitions of work by New Street tenants to Magnum photographers, public and community art projects, an ongoing educational programme, international exchange projects and more.

out of the blue seeks to provide social, cultural and recreational opportunities for all members of the community regardless of sex, colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origins, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, age or religious belief.

out of the blue is an equal opportunities employer.
