ANDREA WALSH
ARTIST STATEMENT
I work with glass and bone china - both individually and in combination - to create fluid sculptural forms that examine the delicate and magical nature of both materials.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
I studied Fine Art at Staffordshire University from 1995 to 1998, and then completed a Masters Degree in Glass at Edinburgh College of Art from 2000 to 2001.
The source of inspiration and thinking behind my work occurs through a working knowledge of my chosen materials. The very behaviour of glass and bone china, both their individual and combined qualities, fuels my making and further research. Glass appears magical as it metamorphoses via process and time, and while doing so creates layers and patterning which can be seen to become 'frozen' internally. Bone China again exhibits complementary qualities when worked to an extremely fine shell. Reflection and shadow can then result in exciting effects, whether within the confines of the piece or on a much larger scale to define a particular space. A primary objective of my work is that the single piece is equally as effective as a group of works en mass forming installation or interior statements. Although the forms created are deceptively free-flowing forms, the control exercised in order to take advantage of the inherent and pure qualities is the main factor in my making.
