OUT OF THE BLUE ARTS CENTRE SET FOR SUMMER OPENING
Drill Hall Boost for Edinburgh Arts Scene
Phase 2 of the half million pound Out of the Blue Drill Hall refurbishment is scheduled for completion in July 2006. Work began in January to create studio space for 30 more artists and creative businesses as well as a theatre and gallery café. The pioneering design uses the latest recycled materials and green technology including sheep's wool insulation and potentially even a wind-powered coffee machine. The gallery will stage regular exhibitions while the theatre is already in demand for performances, rehearsals and screenings. A public event is planned to mark the opening.
It is the latest step in a multi-million pound transformation of the B-listed ex-Army drill hall in Dalmeny Street, Leith. Purchased by Out of the Blue (OOTB) in 2002, Phase 1 consisted of statutory improvements which paved the way for some 50 creatives to take occupation. Phase 3 will create more urgently-needed studios as well as a sculpture garden from the old rifle range.
OOTB is currently raising funds for Phase 3. You can play your part to support the arts in Edinburgh by Clicking-A-Brick. To get the latest news on all OOTB activities and events sign up to the mailing list.
Phase 2 was made possible through the support of The Scottish Arts Council, Scottish Enterprise, City of Edinburgh Council, Fresh Futures, Community Scotland and IKEA.
