MARGARET MCLACHLAN
ARTIST STATEMENT
I studied Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1999 and have
exhibited in a number of spaces including The Pearce Institute, Tron Theatre,
Royal Scottish Academy, Vision On: on line gallery and at Out of the Blue.
I make works that are intended to be visually alluring and
which begin to arouse a sense of recognition in the viewer.
They appear to have had a purpose yet remain curious objects
of no specific use. The notion of my work is based upon the
structures of memory and I make visceral objects which pertain
to the idea of a relic constructed from fragments. My chosen
materials are generally found or reclaimed, alluding to the
things we throw away or forget about and how they can be
recycled and refashioned to suit another purpose.
The process of the work consists of the elements of layering,
which refers to memory as fragmentation and the 'self' as multi
layered; layers of experience with the resulting memories.
Therefore a person is the agglomeration of their memories.
Memory is made up of different elements that operate by the
coming together of fragments. The process of my work is organic,
creating works that are made up from fragments of material
to form a cohesive piece |
