SARAH SANDFORD
ARTIST STATEMENT
The natural world is comprised of elements that form distinct and perceptible
patterns. I am interested in the organization of patterns and the
layering thereof, through which complex structures are formed.
These structures, relating to natural forms, become disguised
behind the pseudo-realism of the final state in which they
are presented. Are they part of the inner workings of the
human body? Could they represent some new life form?
Such questions are inherent to viewing my images, as they
are shrouded in uncertainty, yet are reminiscent of inner
spaces representing mysterious and intimate worlds within
ourselves. My representation of these worlds does not rest
solely on their physical or structural elements. Rather,
they are abstracted forms that embody the intricate, complex
nature relevant to understanding our own unique histories
of emotional states, mental conditionings and spiritual journeys.
The process of layering becomes essential to my work. I
use line, colour, texture and pattern to create depth. The
image slowly develops through a build up of surfaces. Currently,
I am using light to uncover hidden patterns found in glass
that exist when captured at different angles and at different
times of the day. Working with both old, manufactured glass
windows and new types of glassware, I photograph cast shadows
and reflections. Both types of glass create images ranging
in feel to that of early medical imaging, like that of x-rays
and sonograms, to more advanced equipment, such as SEM microscopes
and telescopic images from space. Using photo-silkscreen
and multiple transparency resolutions, I print several layers
of colour. By incorporating elements of heavy darkness against
strong light the images become etherealised. A sense of time
and space from that of another realm occurs and one is left
questioning the meaning of these hidden places. |
