The course is run by myself, Simone Melanie, and I am passionate about plants. I studied Environmental Science (plant ecology) at university 20 years ago and since then I have been working with plants and people in various settings including drug and alcohol treatment centres and being a head gardener. In 2013 I started Solar Ripe selling Organic Medicinal Herbs, growing a herb garden in Fife and running workshops. My learning of herbalism has come from studying with various herbalists including Maureen Robertson, Keith Robertson, Fiona Morris and the Seed SistAs, and a lot of self study and trial and error! I prefer to use native plants that we can find growing all around us such as Elder, Plantain and Blackberry and use organic, recycled, and local as much as is possible (so expect so see an old jam jar here and there)!

On previous courses:

The course was friendly, gentle, patient and overall amazingly comprehensive” – Diana

The information was really set at the right standard for a beginner” – Paula

I enjoyed making the Tincture, the experimental aspect” – Tara

Simone teaches naturally and informally

I enjoyed sharing experiences and tasting the delicious infusions

Due to costs of room hire, fees now need to be paid in advance. This class takes place in the Cutting Room, Out of the Blue Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny St, Edinburgh, EH6 8RG.

*Sliding Scale
I want to make my courses as accessible as possible for those on low incomes. At the same time this is my livelihood and there are costs of rooms to hire etc. I hope that by having a sliding scale the workshops are affordable, and that a balance can be found that respects all involved.
The top bracket is for those on a higher income (this enables me to offer the lower bracket).
The concession is for those who cannot afford to pay the full cost because of being unwaged/student etc. I do not ask to see proof of income, but ask that you choose what is suitable for you. If you still are unable to afford to come but would like to please still contact me and we will see what we can do.

We use the space we have developed in 6 buildings in Edinburgh for studios, workshops, classes, projects, exhibitions, social enterprises, events, clubs, music making, markets, a cafe and more.

Our all year round activity helps create the culture of the city, supporting the local economy and having positive social impact for the thousands of individuals and organisations we work with.

We would humbly accept a financial donation, however small, in support of our work.
