In pursuit of curiosities within themes of natural science, much of my work emerges from a desire to do something particular with paint, having been preoccupied with the materials and process of oil painting since my first days at Camberwell College of Art & Design. Subjects which lie closest to the boundary of my own comprehension, or even at the limits of our collective knowledge, and those whose scale or complexity make them difficult to observe directly offer the greatest opportunities for ambiguity and flights of fancy. Space is created for elements of abstraction, colour relationships, mark-making and scale to become paramount. The resultant paintings aim to capture something of that sense of wonder or inner calm when encountering the phenomena and fragile treasures of our natural environment which can seem to be nothing short of magical.
