Home Away from Home Exhibition

Tuesday 12th - Friday 15th September 2023
10:00am - 5:00pm (4pm on 15th September), free entry

‘Home Away from Home – Little Palestine by the Bay’ is an exciting exhibition of the work of photographer Najib Joe Hakim and organised by the Network of Photographers for Palestine

Najib Joe Hakim works as a documentary photographer and artist based in San Francisco, CA. Born in Lebanon of Palestinian parents and raised in the United States, Najib only discovered his Palestinian roots during his college years. This realisation led to his first visit to Palestine and changed the course of his studies, work and life. From then on he devoted his work to the attainment of Palestinian rights.

His book Palestine Diary, exhumes photographs he took during his first visit to Palestine, combining the images with excerpts from his personal contemporary journal to spotlight some of the roots of the crisis in Palestine today. In 2020 he won the Rebuilding Alliance Storytellers Award for his projects Home Away from Home: Little Palestine by the Bay, Born among Mirrors and the video Cooking Lessons: A Palestinian American Story.

In 2019 he was an Art Fellow at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and his digital collage “Sending Wings instead of Arms” was placed first in a global competition sponsored by the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights. He is also a past nominee for the US Artist Fellowship. Najib is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Network of Photographers for Palestine (NPP).

In 2020 he collaborated with two other NPP members, Craig Maclean and Ursula Mindermann, to produce the book “Home Away from Home” telling the stories of diaspora Palestinians in Germany, Scotland and the USA, which featured as Book of the Month in “This Week in Palestine” (May, 2021).

Najib will open his Scottish tour on Monday 11th September here at the Drill Hall and will be speaking about his work that evening at 7.00 p.m. Delicious Palestinian food will be served. The event is free of charge and open to all.

The exhibition will be open:

  • Tuesday 12th – Thursday 14th September, 10:00am – 5:00pm
  • Friday 15th September, 10:00am – 4:00pm
