Celebrating 30 years!

It’s now 30 years since Out of the Blue sprang up from nowhere (hence the name) into a small gallery space in Edinburgh’s Old Town, and we’ve been busy celebrating!

Showcase Event

Celebrations began on Thursday 30th May with a special showcase event at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall. Guests were treated to performances from All or Nothing and Active Inquiry, music from The Clarsach SocietyKnockwood and The Bongo Club, exhibitions and delicious canapes and drinks from the Drill Hall Cafe. We also launched our exciting new visual identity which we are in the process of rolling out!

One of the highlights was the founders recounting why and how they started Out of the Blue. They acknowledged how much has been achieved in the 30 years since the idea was just a twinkle in their eyes!

Our celebrations continued into the weekend with an Open Studios Weekend at Out of the Blue Abbeymount Studios which was attended by over 700 visitors.

Art Installations

As part of our celebrations, we commissioned two installations which will be on display at the Drill Hall until the end of the year. The first, Recollection, was created by Drill Hall residents Biomorphis and features 100 vibrant buckets hanging in the Main Hall. This piece is a homage to the Drill Hall, capturing both its challenges and its enduring spirit. The second, A Collection Comes Together, was created by Abbeymount Studios resident Max Machen. He has created two complementary designs, screen printed onto canvas using stencils. They’re displayed in the main hall and worth viewing next time you’re in the Drill Hall.

Other Events and Activities

Throughout the year we’ll also be working with our resident artists and partners to create a series of events, exhibitions, workshops and markets to commemorate our 30th anniversary. To find out more about these just take a look at our website.

In the meantime, we’ve got a whole host of other events and activities taking place at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall in July, including our legendary Flea Market on Saturday 27th July.

As always, the Drill Hall Café will be open throughout July, serving locally sourced and seasonal produce, with wonderful baked goods, all made in-house!

In the meantime, find out more about what’s coming up, and here’s to the next 30 years!

Over the course of 2024 Out of the Blue will continue to offer opportunities for artists and members of the community to learn, participate and earn income.

We use the space we have developed in 6 buildings in Edinburgh for studios, workshops, classes, projects, exhibitions, social enterprises, events, clubs, music making, markets, a cafe and more.

Our all year round activity helps create the culture of the city, supporting the local economy and having positive social impact for the thousands of individuals and organisations we work with.

We would humbly accept a financial donation, however small, in support of our work.
