The Out of the Blue Drill Hall cafe (established 2007) has been reviewed as one of the five best cafes in Scotland 2021 and ‘the beating heart of Leith’ by the Times. The List Eating and Drinking Guide has said ‘Social enterprise cafés don’t come much more professional or enticing than the Drill Hall café.’
The Drill Hall cafe has always run training programmes where trainees have often become employed as vital cafe staff team members and even gone on to set up their own cafes.
Our current new enterprise within the cafe is the Cook School. It was set up in 2020 as a chance for people of all ages and skill levels to get involved, and learn how to cook and bake.
During periods of lockdown we used our cafe kitchen to make meals for vulnerable people in the community and developed our preserving skills to make jams, pickles and chutneys. To date we have diverted almost half a ton of potential food waste from the bin. With the help of volunteers we also started a lockdown kitchen garden at our Meanwhile site, just off Leith Walk.
Now you will find our lovely preserves on sale in the Drill Hall cafe and served with your toast or inside your slice of Victoria Sponge.
Our cafe now runs and supports the legendary monthly Flea Market and Freeze Frame film nights.
We look forward to welcoming you to Out of the Blue for a unique programme of exhibitions and events.
Thank you for your support.
